napkin rings
My daughter found napkin rings she loved online, I would include the link but she didn't save it ...
1. cutting burlap ... if you pull a thread and cut along the line that is created, you will be able to fray the edges evenly.
2. I stitched the edges of the lace to the burlap to get some stability since burlap likes to fray.
3. I used sticky tape to join the edges in the back.
4. The bows were biggie yarn from Knitpicks.
5. Then I took the leftovers from fraying the burlap to stitch a cross stitch reinforcement across the back.
6. I ironed them on a low setting.
7. My daughter ordered buttons with everyone's name from Zazzle online.
On the wedding day, a fresh billy ball flower completes the look.

Cupcake decorations
Supplies |
I found the wafer paper at Amazon.com. It is made from potato starch and vegetable oil, and is totally edible although not terribly tasty. It punches easily with a paper punch. I sprayed it with watered down food coloring and made a bunch of colored butterflies and flowers with pink and with mint green centers glued in with cookie icing..
JoAnns, Hobby Lobby and Michaels all carry cake decorating supplies and punches. All 3 often have 40 or 50% off coupons if you are patient enough to wait and buy one thing at a time.
Cost for decorated cupcakes: (not considering sales or coupons)
wafer paper Amazon $14.80 link
cookie icing(to use as glue) JoAnns $4.99
sugar pearls for centers JoAnns $4.99 (2) I bought pink and green
Fiskers flower punch Jo Anns $ 5.99
Martha Stewart small butterfly punch Jo Anns $15.99
Martha Stewart large butterfly punch Jo Anns $24.99
food coloring Walmart $2.39
spritz bottle Walmart $ .99
I found that using a tweezers was very helpful ... I dipped the sugar balls in a puddle of icing and put them in the center of the flowers to dry.

Butterfly guest book
The guest book for this wedding will be a large white board and various colored butterflies on magnets.
The butterflies were cut on a sizzix machine and sticky magnets adhered to the back.
Markers for sign in have flowers made of the Stampin Up butterfly punch.
I cut 4 of each, and used a dabber to color the inside a darker pink.
A tiny green punched flower hides the staple from the top.
The very bottom layer was slit and bent down to attach the flower to the end of the marker.
Tie on a pretty ribbon and the markers are ready to display ... in a peanut butter jar with shiny pebbles in the bottom and a bow on top !
Markers and butterflies are available at my new Etsy Shop ... visit CathysArtCart link

Placemats for the kiddies
Amanda says I need to sell my stuff.
I decided if I ever Did open an Etsy shop, this is what I would sell. Must go back to my teaching days but it was such fun putting these placemats together for Amanda.
All of the terms are from her wedding, we have scrambled flower names from the flowers in her bouquet, a word search with wedding terms plus farm animals since her wedding is at a farm, a dot to dot of the barn where the reception is, and a cupcake to color just like the ones we will be serving. All in all, great fun.
The grownups get boring placemats from super sparkly paper that I bought from PaperandMore and cut into placemats by cutting off 1 1/2 inches from one end and cutting corners. It is the paper we used for her invitation and probably way more than I should have spent on placemats.
The kids ones ... well, I just got copies made at Office Max. Then I cut them down to match the size of the adults' placemats.
I think this is my favorite thing of all I made for her wedding. When I mailed them to her for approval, I got a photo back. She said they did the word search right after they opened the box! Hope the kids at the wedding enjoy them as much!
I've attached a generic word search below if you want to make your own placemats.
Edited in ... I DID open a shop after the wedding ... I can design one for you if you wish. Here is my etsy shop address, Cathys Art Cart
I can print them and cut them, or send you a file to make your own.

Signs
If you are old enough to remember burma shave signs on the highway, then you will remember the inspiration for this sign.
Back in the day of road travel, there were series of 4 signs in rhyme, ending with "burma shave" all along America's highways. Well, it will make Mike and me smile at the wedding, even if we are the only ones to remember.
Making the signs was quite a learning process. We went through a variety of wood ideas, from shingles to barn wood to 1 x 3's and ended up buying a 2 x 4 foot piece of oak at Lowes for under 10 dollars which was adequate for the 16 signs we planned. I printed off the signs in a variety of fonts and chose "cinnamon cake" as my favorite. These were printed in 125 size. That too took a lot of testing! Then I spaced them out on a piece of brown paper to see how they would look.
Next Mike cut the board into 12 inch sections and then cut pieces to fit each sign. Meanwhile I scribbled on the back of each print out with a graphite stick .. a #2 pencil would do, but we were going into major production and the graphite stick was faster. I was able to position them on the wood and draw over the letters with the graphite on the back transferring to the wood.
Next I carefully painted the letters using black acrylic paint. But the signs seemed so ... normal. I used a punch to cut 3/4 and 1 inch circles and put them randomly on a signs for the smoking area. (don't you love the name ... my brilliant husband thought of it.)
Sent it off by email for approval by the bride and got the go ahead to put polka dots on the signs.
Found some round objects on my desk and plopped on the dots. I think they add a nice touch.

Cupcake lace and tower
The tower was ordered from Cheerio ... cupcake lace is a gathered 2 1/4 inch lace cut into 8 1/2 inch pieces. Each was overlapped 1/4 inch and stitched. I found they held their shape best if I put them over white cupcake papers on 3 oz plastic sample cups. I think it will be easier to switch the cupcakes into them as we set up the tower. Also they should be easier to serve this way.
spacing for 110 cupcakes |
The tower looks great with 60 cupcakes circling the edge of each layer, or up to the 110 cupcakes shown here... sans cupcake ...
I am glad I got the 7 layer one!
